backup bigfile tablespace

One may pretend bigfile tablespace is bad, because you cannot backup/restore in parallel.

SQL> create bigfile tablespace big datafile size 1g;

Tablespace created.

RMAN> configure device type disk parallelism 4;

using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
old RMAN configuration parameters:
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 4 BACKUP TYPE
TO COMPRESSED BACKUPSET;
new RMAN configuration parameters:
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 4 BACKUP TYPE
TO COMPRESSED BACKUPSET;
new RMAN configuration parameters are successfully stored

RMAN> backup tablespace big section size 100m;

This works fine 😉

SECTION SIZE requires 11gR1 or later

    Laurent,
    Have you try to do full db backup with multiple bigfile tablespace? I could not find any example from Oracle doc.
    Also, is there way to recover bigfile in parallel?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Yes you can backup/recover a bigfile in parallel

    backup datafile ‘f1.dbf’ section size 1G;

    so it will create 1G backup piece, that can be restored and backup in parallel.

    However this is a 11g feature…

    no, you backup in small (1g) sections, then Oracle will be able to do the recover in parallel.

    If you backup the datafile in only one piece (as in 10g), then no, there is no possible parallelism
